My very first NOVEL !

It is pretty exciting--after writing five books that are compilations of personal testimonies, etc, I am finally going to take the jump into writing a novel.

My friend, Drew, has been asking me for years, "Betty, when are you going to write a novel?" and I just reply, " I don't know."  Well, Drew, I have begun.

My young life was spent riding back and forth on Highway 66 between Oklahoma and California. No, we were not a military family, my folks just liked to move around I suppose.  I've been told "You should write about what you know" and I know what it is like to be packed into the back seat of a car with four other siblings for hours at a time as it travels through rain, sleet, snow and bright sunshine from one destination to another.  What I don't remember my older sisters do and so here goes, traveling across country during the war years of the 40's.

It was a time when food, clothes, gas and just about everything was rationed to help with the war effort.  You had to have special ration stamps for each product and if you didn't have one for, example, sugar--you traded one you had, for beans, to someone who needed to buy beans and they in turn gave you one of their sugar ration stamps.

This is not a biography. It is pure fiction, sprinkled with fact as I recall it, about the times, and the way the Americans managed to survive during the Second World War.  It was a time when people shared what they had, helped each other in any way they could and enjoyed life.  They worked hard, played hard, prayed hard and most of all loved deeply.

As time goes by I will share excerpts with you and would appreciate your input as to your thoughts on whether it is interesting enough to continue.  And if you happen to have a friend who is a publisher with a "BIG" publishing house, put in a good word for me.  I plan to shop this to publishers instead of self-publishing as I have done in the past.

It is time to sign off for the evening, have a wonderful day and please say a prayer for me to be able to complete this project  in a timely manner.

Be blessed, abundantly!

Pay it forward!

How often do we hear the phrase, Pay it forward, say "oh that is nice" and go on about our business?   When it happens to you, it is amazing!

My daughter and I were sitting in a restaurant last Friday and three women sat down in the booth across from us.  We exchange a few pleasant words and then they finished eating and left.

Our waitress walked over to our table and said, "the woman in purple paid for your breakfasts".  We said "What woman in purple?" She replied, "She was sitting in the booth there, the woman who had the cute hat."

We were so surprised it took a few moments to sink in, and I asked, "Why did she do that?"

"She said she likes to Pay it Forward," was the waitress' reply.

I left the restaurant and headed for the post office to pick up our mail. When I left the building, I noticed a homeless man sitting next to the building.  He looked up and asked, "Can you possibly help me?  I am so hungry.  I don't want your money, just some food.  But if you can't help me that's alright, God bless you!"

I walked on, without responding, and as I walked I had this overpowering urge to turn back.  I continued to my car, opened the door and got in.  Still feeling this urge to help I opened my car door , walked back to where the man was sitting and asked. "Are you hungry right now?" and he said, "Oh yes ma'am, I am near starving.  I don't want money, just something to eat."

I told him to meet me over at the Del Taco and I would buy him some food.  He was very thankful and courteous as he stood waiting for the food to arrive.
